The 2012 Arsies: February 2, 2012

February 2, 2012

Happy Groundhog's Day!
Oh, Machine Head, this must be a humiliating day for you. “Unto The Locust”, one of the highlights of your long and storied career, bested by a three-song EP? Them's the breaks. “Locust” is plenty enjoyable, and in its own way progressive. But it's just not as special or revolutionary a move for Machine Head as “The Parallax” is for BTBAM, which has more twists in turns in half the time. “The Parallax” brings everything that the Machine Head full-length album does, from nastily dark attitude to delicate melody to lofty musicianship, and does it all far better. And while I gave the drum tone prize to Decapitated's Krimh Lechner, BTBAM's Blake Richardson handily wins the Danny Carey Memorial Gilded Wristbands for best performance, as evidenced on the EP (check out this drum performance video if you even feel like scoffing). BTBAM wins the prize, and closes out our Round Of 16.
Tomorrow, the end of the week brings the beginning of the end of the Arsies, as we slide into the Quarterfinals, with two very different but excellent approaches to metal: Textures and The Black Dahlia Murder.
