The 2012 Arsies: January 24, 2012

January 24, 2012

Welcome to Round 2! From here on out, every band is a winner (including the 15 losers). First up: Ghoul and Textures, two very different kinds of metal.
Ghoul gets the coin flip, so we start with “Transmission Zero”... and pretty quickly falters. Sure, the tracks are all still rockin' fun, but after a while the seams in the fabric of the album's various lo-fi balls-to-the-wall influences start to come apart, a dull monotony sets in.
Not so with “Dualism”, with its many... textures. There, I said it. This album has more range, interest, and subversive power. Also, “Burning The Midnight Oil” has as much heart as “Sanguine Draws The Oath” has balls, something that the Ghoul album can't match.
Nice work, Textures! You've made it into the Quarterfinals! Tomorrow, we'll see who Textures goes up against. Will it be Symphony X or The Black Dahlia Murder?
